FOOD IS MY BEST FRIEND
If Chicago is going to come on top for something (among other things like its hockey team, beautiful clean city, and amazingly good looking people) its going to be its restaurants. So if Michigan is going to impress me in any way it’s going to be how I am fed. Just down the street is Benton Harbor, and don’t let the name fool you. The little town has a lot to offer, and its up and coming art district is doing an amazing job of helping BH rise up again. So lets talk about everyones favorite and a thing I hope everyone can relate to… BBQ!! I used to work at a little place called Q-BBQ in Lagrange Park Illinois and I figured no where could compete, but as I pulled into Lark’s BBQ I could see and smell the wood on fire and the meat cookin’
It was love at first sight.. and felt like someones mama was cooking behind the kitchen, and the atmosphere felt like nothing less. So when I order my pulled pork I think to myself.. is it going to be everthing I expected? Can somewhere give the satisfaction like Portillos? LouMalnatis?? I bit into awe as droll came down my face. You did it Michigan.. OH YOU DID IT !!

THE (new) PLACES THAT MATTER
Since I’ve been here I have found there to be many tasty places with a different story. I found myself surrounded by families rather than franchises, and go-getters rather than takers… and the food and unique places to prove it. Larks is among a million little places in this small area that proved to me food isn’t about how big it is on the outside.. and this city girl learned a lesson in that to say the least. Her belly has been full and her heart has been happy.
Who doesn’t love craft beer? A huge change since leaving behind the pretty lights was the culture I was about to become apart of, and huge part of that culture was breweries, craft beer, and the crazy passionate people that came along with it! From stouts to wheats, and wheats to IPA’s I was slowly learning the most important lesson in life; how to drink properly. I acquired the taste of a 45 year old man and was amazed by the talent, passion, and time some people were putting into this form of art. Some of the best places in my little south-west town are places everyone should visit.

Among other things like acquiring this skill to understand flavors in beer, I was meeting some interesting people with some interesting tales, and I was also starting to appreciate all of that neat locations Michigan has to offer for beer lovers and travelers. It was, and still is, awesome to try new places, taste new beers, and meet new people along the way. I even take back all my knowledge of this art to my friends in Chicago.. and even they can’t believe their taste buds!!! The best part too: each place is as unique as the last. With these Michigan liquor licenses, each brewery can only have their own beers, wines, and liquors on tap! And to top it all off, you get to stuff your face with amazing food as well. Each place is known for their wonderful food as well.

WHAT ADVENTURES LIE AHEAD?
One can only imagine all the cool things you can do in the state of Michigan, and I was about to experience it all first hand. There was so much to do the moment I moved here, and it wasn’t your typical Wrigley Field visit or a day spent on Michigan Ave.. but some real outdoor things. If there was something you know about me it’s that I am not a girly girl by any means, so I was ready to get my hands a little dirty. In the summer the lake is absolutely beautiful and filled with awesome people. Some visiting their summer homes, some traveling across the state, and some who have spent their entire lives here, and everyone had one thing in common: ready to adventure. Whether it was renting a canoe for the day, parasailing, or going on a wine tour the place was buzzing from morning to night. But here I am in this tourist centered place, in the dead of winter. Now what?? To my surprise the adventure didn’t end and I found myself climbing the frozen waves of Lake Michigan and dodging the melting patches with rushing water underneath. It was exhilarating and had this city girl on her toes.
