C: The Culinary

If Chicago is going to come on top for something (among other things like its hockey team, beautiful clean city, and amazingly good looking people) its going to be its restaurants. So if Michigan is going to impress me in any way it’s going to be how I am fed. Just down the street is Benton Harbor, and don’t let the name fool you. The little town  has a lot to offer, and its up and coming art district is doing an amazing job of helping BH rise up again. So lets talk about everyones favorite and a thing I hope everyone can relate to… BBQ!! I used to work at a little place called Q-BBQ in Lagrange Park Illinois and I figured no where could compete, but as I pulled into Lark’s BBQ I could see and smell the wood on fire and the meat cookin’L2
It was love at first sight.. and felt like someones mama was cooking behind the kitchen, and the atmosphere felt like nothing less. So when I order my pulled pork I think to myself.. is it going to be everthing I expected? Can somewhere give the satisfaction like Portillos? LouMalnatis?? I bit into awe as droll came down my face. You did it Michigan.. OH YOU DID IT !!

Outside of Larks BBQ in Benton Harbor

Pulled pork with mac & cheese, fried mushrooms, and hush-puppies on the side.

Since I’ve been here I have found there to be many tasty places with a different story. I found myself surrounded by families rather than franchises, and go-getters rather than takers… and the food and unique places to prove it. Larks is among a million little places in this small area that proved to me food isn’t about how big it is on the outside.. and this city girl learned a lesson in that to say the least. Her belly has been full and her heart has been happy.

*Bon Appetit*
